These Infection Cards support GPs and primary care teams with safety-netting conversations for patients diagnosed with infections that can be managed at home.
Available in separate adult and paediatric versions, the cards outline the key warning signs of sepsis and reinforce when patients should seek urgent reassessment if their condition worsens.
The cards are designed to complement clinical assessment by helping patients and whānau understand that infections can deteriorate rapidly, even after an appropriate initial consultation. They provide a practical way to reinforce return advice and encourage patients to ask, "Could it be sepsis?" if symptoms worsen.
These have been widely endorsed by RNZCGP, RNZCUC & clinicians working in primary care.

More about the Sepsis Quality Improvement Programme
The sepsis quality improvement programme provides a standard approach across New Zealand to treat sepsis. The programme supports health professionals working in hospitals by providing tools and resources to improve early recognition and treatment of patients with sepsis.
We worked with HQSC and a multidisciplinary sepsis technical advisory group, with representatives from clinical professional bodies from paediatrics, maternity, general medicine, general practice, urgent care, emergency medicine, intensive care and infectious diseases to develop the resources. It provided clinical expertise, insights and strategic feedback.
