Maternal sepsis is a time-critical, life-threatening condition and remains a leading cause of preventable maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. In Aotearoa New Zealand, disparities persist, with higher risk among Māori and Pasifika women and those in rural and resource-limited settings.
The sepsis quality improvement package, published in 2025 by HQSC & endorsed by Health NZ, provides a standard approach across New Zealand to treat sepsis. It supports health professionals working in hospitals, primary & community care by providing tools and resources to improve early recognition and treatment of patients with sepsis. This presentation will include information about the package and how to best use it in your own practice. It will explore current evidence, clinical warning signs, escalation pathways, and practical approaches to supporting whānau through safe, effective, and equitable care.
